This Davis Petty is simply a place saver between Frances Moore Petty and a 2nd Davis Petty-Somewhere there is another Davis Petty who seems to fit into this family. Here is correspondance:
Generation One:Davis Petty: Pittsylvania County - Davis Petty Appears in Pittsylvania Probate records-book 15, 1845-47.
Davis married Mary “Polly” (Wells?)-“Polly Petty”. “Polly Petty” appears in Pittsylvania Probate Records Book 7, 1821-1824.Note: The names in this family make research confusing. They usually named children after parents. There are at least 3 Isham Pettys -father, son and a grandson and at least two Davis Pettys-grandfather & grandson.
Another confusion of names is that three generations of Petty’s had a wife named “Polly Petty”. Davis’ wife was Polly Petty, his son Isham’s wife was Polly Petty and his son Isham M. married Mary Evins, who also was called Polly Petty.
Generation 2: Isham Petty, b. 1780 Halifax VA,
· Pittsylvania VA marriage records: Nov. 24, 1814 Marriage in Pittsylvania VA to Polly Wells
· 1820 Census Pittsylvania County VA Northern District-near (Swansonville) , west of Chatham, VA
· 1833-1834 Processioner’s Land Description-Pittsylvania VA-Joseph Wells, John Wells, Joel Wells and Isham Petty are described as neighbors.
· Note: At least three marriages occur between the Wells and Petty families- Davis Petty & Mary Wells, Isham Petty & Polly Wells, and George Wells and Nancy Petty marry in Henry County on May 4, 1809. (New River Valley Notes indicate that Henry County was formed because it was closer for those in western Pittsylvania to do business than in Pittsylvania County. I found three of the Petty family marriages there)
· 1820 Pittsylvania Census-Isham Petty-males -1 < 10 (Davis M Petty-born 1820)-1 18-26 yo male. Females: 2 < 10 and 1 female 16-24 yo-- plus 3 male slaves and 2 female slaves.
o I feel strongly that Isham M. Petty(Isham #2) b1825 in Pittsylvania Co and Davis M. Petty b. 1820 are brothers-sons of Isham & Polly Petty
· 1840 Pittsylvania Census-Davis M. Petty listed as head of household
· 1850 Census Isham (#1-sr) had his son Davis M. and his wife Sarah and their three children living with him. Children of Davis M. & Sarah: Isham (#3 b. 1844), Tabitha, & Elizabeth
· Probate Records Pittsylvania Book 12, 1837-1840 lists Polly Petty (#2-Isham’s wife)
· 1860 Census- Isham (#1-sr) still living alone on the farm in Pittsylvania Co.
· Pittsylvania Death Records: 1860 of Martha Petty Garrett (age 35) lists Isham and Polly Petty as her parents. Her husband was Samuels M. Garrett and her son was Silas M. Garrett.Generation 3:
1. Isham M. Petty was born 1825 Pittsylvania County VA. Lived in Northern District in western area. Later went by the name Isom. M Petty. (Note: LDS lists Isham b. 1825 as child of Polly Wells and Davis Petty (really Polly #2 Wells and Isham #1)2. Isham M Petty Married Mary “Polly” Evins-documented marriage 25 July 1849 in Henry County VA.
