Died about 1941, 77 years old. I believe her given name was Anna (called Annie). She was married several times after divorcing James Oliver Wells. Her last husband E. J. Hill was the father of W.M. Hill who later married her granddaughter Muriel Wells. Was married as much as 4 times. First James Oliver Wells, George Ciders, Bill Parks and Ezekiel "Zeke" Hill. Minnie Singer told Carolyn Howard that Annie's name was actually Anna and that she died January 9, 1941. 1941 seems more like it would be the actual date but needs to be researched. Our mother Edith (Wells) Oberlin says she died in 1940. Her obituary copy I have shows only a hand written date of 1941. Minnie Singer said Annie had been married 5 times? It is believed all her husbands but James Wells died during their marriages. Her obituary only mentions her first and last husbands. She married James Wells at age 19 per the obituary and was married to him for about 41 years so she would have had to have been married to others before she married him or in the 2 or 3 years after his death before she married Mr. Hill in 1927. But perhaps the obituary neglected to mention that she and E. J. Wells were not married that whole time. The following is a copy of the obituary of Annie Petty: Death of Mrs. E. J. Hill in Fairland Thursday (the handwritten date of 1941 was put on the newspaper clipping). Mrs. E. J. Hill, resident of Fairland for the past several years died at her home there last Thursday morning at 9:20 after a short illness caused by a stroke of paralysis. Anna Laura Petty, daughter of Nathaniel and Maria Ann Petty, was born in Hendricks county, Indiana, July 12, 1863 and when a child came with her parents to Douglas county and grew up near the present Craft school where the parents settled. There she was married to J. O. Wells in June 1882. The family lived in the vicinity of Camargo and West Ridge for four years and then moved to near Iantha, Missouri where they lived for 10 years before movin g back to Douglas county and later to Urbana where her husband died in 1923. She was married to E. J. Hill in 1927. Besides her husband she leaves the following children: M.H. Wells, Villa Grove; N.H. and O.C. Wells, both of Fairland; Mrs. Lizzie Carpenter, Urbana; also 17 grandhcildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Roy Wells a son, was killed on the railroad in 1911 and his widow, Mrs. Bert Brunner recently moved to Villa Grove. Two other children died while the family lived in Missouri. Mrs. Hill was the last of the original Petty family which came from Kentucky to Indiana and then to Illinis in the early part of the last century. Since 1926 a reunion of the descendants of these pioneers has been held annually. A family heirloom has been handed down to M.H. Wells which he prizes. It is a bible about 140 years old and contians a record of the birth of Isaac P., father of Nathaniel Petty in 1768. There are eight step-children, Mart Hill and Mrs. Lillie Martin, Villa Grove; Joe Hill, Ogden; John of St. Joseph; Owen Hill, Hamilton, O., Esta Hill, Williamsburg, Ky., and Mrs. Mary LInville, Dayton, O. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Methodist church in Fairland conducted by Reverend W. R. Spence and the E.L. Mott and Son service was in charge of all arrangements. Pallbearers were John Hill, Robert Berry, W. M. Hill, Ervin Ewin and Verne Talkington. A quartet composed of Ed Allen, Joh Seltzer, Charles Warnes, and Warren Krughoff sang three numbers with Mrs. Stella Mercer accompanying. Burial waas made in the cemetery at Nelson Chapel, west of Villa Grove. The flowers were carried by Katherine Ewin, Olive Stipp, Muriel Hill, Mary Talkington, Minnie Singer and Shirley Ransdell. -- Martha Coleman found the family bible mentioned above in the attic of Edith (Wells) Oberlin in the early 1990's (making it nearly 200 hundred years old at that time). However the Bible was so old it very nearly disentergrated. She was able to save all the information and clippings that were in the bible and made copies of them.

From an old newspaper clipping (does not mention who Mr. McGinnis or Mr. Gilmore were or Mr. Berry, who apparently was the father or her son Robert as mentioned in the clipping of her obituary). Died at age 65 years, 7 months, 16 days. She was converted and united with the Baptist Church when a young girl and lived a faithful Christian life until her death. She leaves to mourn her going away, one son, Robert Berry, a Daughter-in-law, Hazel Berry, and two granddaughters, Constance and Norma Jean Berry; three sisters, Eppie Weatherford of Tuscola; Mrs. Anna Hill (our Grandfather Melvin Wells mother), Fairland (Illinois?), Mrs. J.Z. York of New Haven, Indiana; one brother, Harry Petty, Lebril, Mo., and a twin sister Julia Petty, preceded her in death. The funeral was held from her late home in Mason at 1 o'clock Monday and burial was in Watson Cemetery. Those attending the funeral from this city were: Mr. & Mrs. Robert Berry and family, Mr. L. A. Day, Mr. Bruce Teeters, Mr. & Mrs. E. J. Hackett, Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Weatherford and Mrs. Bud Weatherford. In a picture she is identified as Lula Gillmore McGinnis
