About 1920 he was assembler at the Gleaner Combine Company in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. He was educated University of Missouri from 1928 to 1930 in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri. From 1930 to 1940 he was project engineer for the State Highway Department in Marion County, Illinois. From 1941 to 1945 he was project engineer for the United States Army in the Midwestern United States. From 1945 to 1968 he was owner and operator of a highway construction company in Missouri. From 1968 to 1972 he was City Engineer in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. He was educated Buckner High School in Buckner, Jackson County, Missouri. He broke his nose playing football, and it remained crooked from then on.
