Catherine Diantha Petty-3537

J. Petty Jones

A Romance:

In may 1884, Diantha's father, Bishop William George Petty, left Sanpete with a dozen or more families, who were called by the Church to colonize St. Johns, Ariz. Upon reaching House Rock Valley near Lee's Ferry, they were obliged to wait over more than a month for the raging Colorado River to sibside, so ferrying might be done with safety.

This spot with its grass, flowers, cool water, adn some shade, was ideal for man and beast, as well as for Cupid to shoot a few arrows. One afternoon, young Dave Jones remarked to his companion as they rode into camp, "See that little "gal" out there gathering flowers? I'm going to marry her!"

"The hell you are!" replied Haws, "she's too young."

"If they're big enough, they are old enough, is my theory," retorted the determined young man from Provo.

Love worked fast. In three weeks, David, age 24, and Diantha, 16, with their parents' consent and blessing, were on their way ot St. George to be married in the Temple. Brother J. Christianson went along as chaperon, and to have a painful tooth extracted. from The Albert Petty Family by Charles Petty.
