DIARY OF JAMES MARION PETTY

Born 24 November 1827
Died 18 September 1891

A copy of this diary was sent to me by Barb McGee. Barb received it from Pat Scammahorn, who had typed it in 1987. The diary is about 60 single-spaced typed pages. It covers the period from 1 January 1883 to 7 April 1884, skips almost five years, and then covers 1 January 1889 until 11 September 1891.

As the diary is very long, Barb asked me to summarize it for the website. If anyone would like a complete copy, I will be happy to send a photocopy. You can contact me at sevillecathy@hotmail.com <mailto:sevillecathy@hotmail.com> or my address: Cathy Goldschmidt 216 Seville Way San Mateo, CA 94402.

The diary has daily entries, each from 2-10 lines long. James M. Petty never missed a day. There is no punctuation, and the names he used are nicknames or partial names, which makes it somewhat difficult to be sure exactly who he is talking about. However, I found it fascinating to see the names of various other Pettys, plus numerous relatives by marriage, appear in the pages. He also mentions literally dozens of friends, neighbors, and clients of his veterinary services. I found it fascinating to see how all the families were intertwined---his children, their spouses, and their spouses’ families.

Here is a partial list of names he mentions: Tom Petty, Ike Petty, John Petty, Al Petty, Lige Petty, Doc Petty, Hen Petty, Fish Petty, Joe Watson, Joe Turnbaugh, Martin Capps, Sam Capps, George Capps, Ema Capps,Tom Dwyer, Ed Fowler, Tom Wagoner, Enos Morgan, Mrs. Lucy Williams, and Jim Duffield.

The diary makes it clear that he had a very busy and productive life. The farm and his veterinary practice were all-consuming occupations. His farm crops were varied and included corn, wheat, rye, oats, timothy, onions, and potatoes. It appears that the farm work was done mostly by family, but there is a mention of a foreman.

In addition to local work, his veterinary practice involved seeing animal patients located some distant from his home in Pittsfield. He mentions going to Missouri towns and seems to travel quite a bit, often staying away overnight if he can’t get home due to the distance or the weather. He lists his animal cases in detail, plus the fees he received. It seems he had a steady practice with a sizeable income. He often brought horses to his own farm in order to care for them, and he mentions the horses by name. He also compounded his own medications for the horses. The practice included all types of farm animals, but he seemed to specialize in horses.

The James Pettys clearly had many friends, family members, and neighbors constantly visiting them at their home, staying for meals, and often remaining overnight. One can visualize all these people coming and going--- helping on the farm, attending church together, and spending long hours together.

Below are a few excerpts from the diary, so you can have a feel for James Marion Petty’s life during these years.
