Winship S. Petty-44730

He was always a farmer.

Note: Possible connection:

Could Mary and Stephen be children of Winship and Eliza?

Could Wm. Moon be related to Elizabeth Petty, wife of Wm Henry Petty?

Note from researcher:
In my search for my Petty roots, I’m still trying to untangle the data on Winship and James Petty, sons of Stephen Petty of Smith Co., TN. As I’ve mentioned before, a Petty family researcher – Irene Petty Watt, I believe – has said that Winship (according to the 1850 census, b. ca. 1843) was named James Winship, married Becky Butler and had at least seven children including Floyd, Myrtle, Doyle, Arvin, Mettie, Willie, Oscar.

But another of Stephen’s sons, James, appears on the 1870 and 1880 censuses, aged 10 and 19 respectively, so b. ca. 1860. Ms Watt does not seem to be aware of James, but he appears to definitely be a different person from Winship, above.

You can see why I wonder if Winship and James have been confused: My great-grandfather, James B. Petty, was born in TN in Dec. of 1860, married Rebecca Butler in TX, and had children named Emma (or Erma), Oscar J., William Silas, Mettie B., Henry Arvin, Myrtle L., Floyd Schilling, and a son mentioned in one census as Hobson and in the next as Robert D.

I had thought that if I could trace Winship that I might be able to determine if the above is confusion or coincidence. But I cannot find this particular Winship in later censuses. I do, however, find that the TN marriage records on Ancestry.com have a Winship Petty marrying Charloty Green on 12-Feb.-1863 in Dekalb Co., TN. (Dekalb Co. is just south of, and bordering Smith Co.) I haven’t found this particular Winship and wife Charloty or Charlotte in any other data banks so far. Do either of you have any information on one or both of them? Of course, they were married during the Civil War, so anything might have happened. (The Winships I have found who served during the war are: Winship Petty, Co. K, 24 Arkansas Infantry; Winship Petty, Co. H, Hardy’s Reg’t, Arkansas Infantry; and Winship S. Petty, 5 North Carolina Cavalry. But there are hundreds of Pettys who served, many listed only by initials.)

Again, I don’t know whether my James is Stephen Petty’s son or not; it’s the similarity of names that makes me want to confirm or eliminate this lead before going elsewhere. I am not very experienced and this, so would truly welcome any pointers or suggestions either of you might have!

Note from researcher: Her grandfather, Floyd Schilling Petty, was indeed brother to my grandfather, William Silas Petty. They were in Chambers County in 1910, but by 1920, William Silas was in Dayton also.

Note from researcher: The census records for Winship and Eliza show different ages for Wm T. and Winship Nathan than when they are married. Hmmm?

1860 TX census, Smith Co, MF page 72. Winship Petty, age 24, and Eliza, age 21, have 3 children in the home. Anna is 5; Martha is 2; and William is 8 months old as of 10 August 1860. Winship is a farmer. The
preceding census record is that of Wm. Clark, age 49, and Dilla, age 44, both born in North Carolina and probably the parents of Eliza.
1880 TX census, Smith Co, MF page 235D. Winship Petty, age 45, and Eliza, age 40, have 5 children in the home. Sarah is 15; Dolly is 10; Nathan is 7; Taylor is 2; and Jane is 1 month old. Winship is a farmer.
1900 TX census, van Zandt Co, MF page 44, line 96. Winship Petty, age 65, and Eliza, age 60, have been married 45 years. Eliza is the mother of 6 children. One of the 5 surviving children remains in the home. William T. is 22. Winship is a farmer.
1910 TX census, van Zandt Co, MF page 9, line 96. Winship Petty, age 75, and Eliza A., age 70, live alone. Winship is a farmer.
