came to Ray Co., MO in 1833Ray county, Mo History vol 2 ref # 977.819 H2rcc
" He stated that a group of "Nowlin's, Todds', bates', Owens' and Pettys', McCroskys's, and others I do not know , nine families in all mad a long journey by covered wagons, drawn by oxen from Halifax Co., Va in Dec. 1838."
He goes on to state that, "William Bates, in company with Joseph Petty, who married Fanny Nowlin was a half sister to his Mother , made a trip on horseback from Ray Co., Missouri to Halifax County, Virginia in 1839, to settle up the estate of Charles F. Bates, who died in 1835. --to the south, near Orrick, Missouri live the descendants of David Bates, who married Mary Ann Petty. (there is other Bates family relationships in that book for that family.)
Due to this, he can not belong to Joseph Petty of Lincoln Co., Tennessee. I am breaking that connection.1 _MILT
