At age 24, he enlisted on March 18, 1862 in the Mississippi 34th Infantry Regimaent, known as the Smith Rifles. After being wounded in the foot during the battle of Chickamauga on Sept 18, 1863, Jack was discharged on Jul 12, 1864 from Marshall Hospital, Columbus, GA. A cousin, LIttleton Petty of Newton Co., GA tended him and hid him during his stay in GA. He then trekked 400 miles on his crutch brom Georgia back to Pontotoc Co., MS. Within a year, he burried both parents in the Old Covered Wagon cemetery in Lafayette Co., MS.
