Previously had his death in 1820/30 in Charlotte VA.
John was married twice, perhaps three times. His surviving widow was Martha Sanders. John was a soldier in the American Revolution. He served from Pittsboro District, North Carolina. He remembered serving under both Captains Clark and Gholson. He recalled being in the Battles of Cane Creek, North Carolina, and Lindley's Mill in 1781. John had twelve children and when he died all except three, James, Stephen, and Elizabeth, lived in another state. Not having exact birth dates, we are presuming that Stephen was the oldest son. Stephen, who lived in North Carolina, administered his father's estate. The archives of Chatham County, North Carolina show that he made petition to be allowed to sell some property of his father, John Petty, who died intestate. He said that "he, the petitioner, and Martha Sanders Petty, his father's widow, with the following named children and grandchildren, were tenants in common, petitioning that the absent children be notified and publication to be made in the Raleigh Register.These are the names of the absent children:1. No proof of this connection.
To set the record on Solomon J. Petty, (some call him Solomon James Petty) this is what is currently thought. I have placed Solomon on as the child of Catherine Petty, based on the fact that we don't want him lost, and this is right now the thinking of some researchers in 2005. Barb McGee remark.
My problem with him being her child is many fold. First, the age of the supposed parents. Second, the supposed cousin theory. Third, no apparent connection to the Summerford family. I really don't believe that any proof can be found to determine who his parents actually were. But for now, I'll leave my database as it is for lack of anything any better. 2007 John Petty remark.Info from: James E Petty of SLC, UT; Crit Petty; & James Petty of SLC, UT;
Note from researcher: I have been told that Solomon (b 24 Aug 1784) was really the illegitimate son of Catherine Petty (at 14) and a Ledbetter cousin (at 13).

From a group disccussion on the parentage of Solomon J. Petty:
There is a lot of speculation about the parentage of Solomon J. Petty. Catherine Petty, the daughter of James Petty and Martha had an illegitimate child, and was taken to court in 1786 concerning this. Since the mother was not usually brought to court until the child was weaned (about 18 to 24 months), that the time of birth would be around 1784 which was the year Solomon was born. A male Petty father for Solomon had not been determined, and it has been assumed that the child Catherine had was indeed Solomon J. Petty. This may indeed be a correct assumption. So then, who was the father of the child? Somewhere along the way, Millington Ledbetter was guessed to be the father. Why? Here is my problem with Millington Ledbetter, being the father. His father, Lewis Ledbetter was born in 1757. Do the math, how old would his son Millington Ledbetter be in 1783, when Solomon J. Petty would have had to be conceived? Catherine Petty (dau. of James), was born anywhere from 1763-1770 time period. My own estimation, and that is all it is (based on the 1766 birth year of her husband, Edward Summerford), and known ages of the other children of James and Martha Petty, would be that Catherine was born in the 1760's. So, who is the father of Solomon? I don't know, and I don't think anyone else does for sure.There is a lot of speculation about the parentage of Solomon J. Petty. On 23 Mar 1786 Deed Bk. A, pp85-86, Union Co. South Carolina, Lewis Ledbetter and wife Sarah paid James and Martha Petty L100 Sterling for 200 acres on Abbington's Creek (a very high price for the time!)
On 27 Jun 1786 State of South Carolina against Catherine Petty: Bastardy. Ordered by the court that the defendant be discharged on her paying the costs. An individual was not brought to court until the child was weaned, at about eighteen months. Catherine would not have had to pay the fine, if she had named the father of the child. The tender age of the parents would have prompted secrecy.
The child, Solomon, named one son Millington Mumpford (after Millington Ledbetter, the probable father), and another son Lewis Ledbetter (after the probable grandfather), and a daughter Sarah Ann (possibly after his probable grandmother --- although there were other Sarah's in the family.
His Obituary states: "Solomon died in Dickson Co., TN on 29 Jan 1860 "in the 77th year of his age. He was born in Union District, South Carolina, and was married in that country to Jerusha Darwin. Emigrated to Tennessee in 1814. Brother Petty made a profession of religin in the year 1833, and lived up to his profession til the time of his death, and died resigned to the will of God. He has left a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his exit from earth and especially his braved widow and children, eleven in number and several grandchildren. Oh that God would interpose in their salvation that they might say, with David, our father cannot come to us, but by the Grace of God, we can go to him. "
