Luke Petty-17407

James William Pettey Bible gives all names as Pettey. At some point, Luke moved with his family to Georgia in an effort to acquire tracts of land lotteries being held beginning in 1805. Luke is first mentioned as a tax defaulter in 1816 Tax Digest of Jones Count (Capt. Wallers Dist.) along with his father, William, and Uncle Zachariah. We see him in the marriage lists the following year where he married Mary Coward on June 19, 1817. Mary's sister, Nelly, married Luke's brother, George. The Coward's were neighbors of the Petty's in Kershaw County, SC and their father was Benjamin Coward with mother Mary.
In 1821 Luke appears in Georgia 1821 land lottery where he obtained 202.5 acress in Monroe County. One year later he sold this land.
In 1830 he is in Harris Co., GA census. The land was opened to settlement in 1828. Along with him was his sister, Susan who had married Hezekiah Harmon and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Coward who was married to William Garndner. In 1833, Susan died - probably in childbirth.
Luke moved ihis family back to Bibb County (former Houston Co.), Georgia to be near his brother, George. He purchased land from Millie Parks. In 1841 he sold that land to his neshew George Petty, Jr.
Family tradition says that Luke and Mary moved to Mississippi, arriving in the winter of 1842. The original destination was the independent nation of Texas. But winter overtook them in Pontotoc Co., MS. They settled there and in Lafayette Co. The Pettys settled on the Tallahacie River in the Rockyford district. Rockyford later changed it's name to Etta and was in Union Co., MS in 1870. Mary is listed as a member of the Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church in Pontotock Co., MS.

listed as b. 1880 in source, however, there is not sufficient time for a
pregnancy between he and Tully for that to have been possible. Am
assuming a typing error and that 1890 is the correct year. Also, children
were listed in source in birth order, making 1880 less believable.
