William A Petty
using 1850 census of Davidson Co., TN

James D. Petty appears to be in the 1850 Davidson Co., TN census twice. The first time I found him he was on
page 508 with his entire family (wife Unity). He & daughter, Columbus, then seem to appear on page 283 living with my John A. Petty's household.

1850 Mortality Schedule Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee
George W. Davidson TN 13 M Jun TN Cholera
J.M. Davidson TN 7 F Jun TN Cholera
James D. Davidson TN 1 M Jun TN Cholera
Tennessee Davidson TN 6 F Jun TN Cholera
Unity Davidson TN 41 F Jun TN Cholera

Between July 02, 1850, and July 07, 1850, James lost four children and his wife, Unity Chisenhall, to " cholera". The oldest two girls also died young, one of "dropsy of the heart" and the other of "lock jaw".
June 11,1860 Census of Nashville Ward 7, Davidson County, Tennessee page #455b, family #516. (Ancestry
Image #8)

Note: James Petty found twice in 1850 census

October 14, 1850 Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee page #141, family #852. (Ancestry Image
#112) James D. Petty 45 SC (carpenter) and his son Columbus 11 TN., were living in the home of his brother, John A. Petty and family. Also, marriage records of Dickson County, Tennesse show that James D. Petty married Mahala Petty on January 2, 1851. Seems strange since his wife, Unity Chisenhall, was shown in census as living November 12, 1850. The only explanation that makes sense to me is, that James Petty's family did die in July of Cholera, and in October he was living with his brother. Returning to his home later, when the census taker made his stop there in November of 1850, he went ahead and listed the members even though they no longer were living, presumably since they were living at the time the census was to start in June of 1850. Will: June 2, 1883 Dickson Co., Tennessee. LDS Film # 002464 James D. Petty signed a will that left everything to his wife Mahala A. Petty, after his debts were paid. It names no children. A *Pallise J. Petty was witness.
