Note from researcher:
I have only recently attempted research on Margaret S. Fain (sister of my gg grandfather, Robert Greenberry Fain) who married William M. Petty (not William H.) in 1867 in Anderson County, Texas. I note in your Petty papers that you say the Ewell Petty Family came to Texas in 1849, settling in Anderson County. I haven't been very successful in finding this family in the Anderson County Census records until I found W(m M.) and M(argaret) and their children as you list them in your research counted in the 1880 Anderson County, Texas Census records. Then today I found the E. Petty family (including Wm M. age 8) counted in the 1850 Choctaw County, Alabama census after the date you have them moving to Texas. I find it interesting that Ewell Petty was a Methodist minister. According to the obituary of Robert Greenberry Fain (deceased 1907) he moved to Anderson County, Texas with his family in the fall of 1855 settling near Palestine, Texas. The obituary states that Robert Greenberry Fain's funeral was attended by his sister, Mrs. Margaret(te) Petty and her son W.R. Petty of Palestine, Texas. The G(reenberry) Fain family and Greenberry's brother, Joel Fain were counted in the 1860 Anderson County, Texas census. I don't know the full history but Joel Fain was involved in establishing one of the first Methodist mission churches in Anderson County. Elva Fain Bizzel

1. EWELL1 PETTY1 was born Abt. 1803 in South Carolina, and died Bef. 1860 in Texas. He

Notes for EWELL PETTY:
The following information referencing Ewell Petty as a Methodist minister was copied from
the Internet:

The list below, taken from “A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church,” Volume IV, by Dr.
Nathan Bangs, includes: “all the preachers who were received into full connection in the
Methodist Episcopal Church to the year 1840, including those who came from Europe and
returned, as well as those who remained in this country.” While the Methodist Episcopal
Church was not organized until 1784, some of the preachers on this list entered the Methodist
ministry long before that. Especially is this true of those who came from England, one of
whom was “received” in the year 1762. Thus, the range of years shown above is from the year
1762 to the year 1840.

Along with the names of those who were yet in the itinerant ministry in 1840, the year in with
they were received is shown. With the name of each who was no longer in the itinerant
ministry, the year is shown in which he was either located, died, withdrew, or was expelled.

THE AUTHOR’S MULTIPLE ENTRIES OF IDENTICAL NAMES WITH IDENTICAL
YEARS HAVE BEEN RETAINED. Perhaps most, if not all, such multiple entries of identical
first names, last names and year-records may have resulted from the co-incidental fact that
two, or even three, men with identical first and last names did actually serve concurrently in
the M. E. ministry. — Duane V. Maxey

History of Methodism in Greene County

METHODISTS: (Source: History of Methodism in Alabama & W. Florida)

The Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Church, which included Alabama, met in
Washington, MS in December 1825 and announced a new "Marengo Circuit" in the AL
District, which included Marengo County and parts of Dallas and Wilcox Counties. The new
circuit minister for 1826 was Rev. John Collier, a native of VA. During his ministry and that
of his successors, the circuit was enlarged to include parts of Sumter, Greene, Perry and Clarke
Counties. Later in 1826, Collier moved on and was replaced by Rev. J.G. Jones and, mid-year
in 1827, was assisted by Rev. T.S. Abernethy in this growing circuit.
