Letter from Marianne Clagett 18 Jul 2004 (clagett at pacbell.netShe had material on her husband dated 1936 via his brother who found some papars in a file cbinet. His gr-gr grandmother was Elizabeth R. Petty who md James DeShields, Her father was John Petty who md. Martha Spillman. Martha's father was Captain Thomas Spillman, grandfather, James Spillman & gr. grandfather Thomas Spillman.
She also had a handwritten letter from papers from Abner Petty who mailed to his wife "Polley Petty," of Botetount Co., VA, Salem Post office. Abner Petty is the brother of Jon Petty The letter is dated 9 Oct 1813, and he wrote from Camp Holly. He is sick and has no physicianand is concerned about his wife and Family's survival while he is away. He speaks of a George Beyne (could be George Bean that you, Barb, show on Pettygenealogy.com. He, George is listed as married to Nancy Petty. He speaks of his 2 sons John and Thornton and how they probably forgot him. He mentions his wife's letter wher she asks whether she should rent some land from a Mr. Evans to sed the rye. He mentions that if he should not return before hard weather sets in, that Pollly should ask her brother Abraham or someone else to help Anthony. (Marianne did not know who that could be. ) to rais the chimney higher and plaster it while he is away. The name on the letter on the bottom right is believed to be Mr Abasalom Smith Jr. He says remember me to John Smith.. He also talkes of Peggy,

Handwritten Paper from Abner to his wife Polley (Mary) Petty of Botetourt County, Virginia, Salem Post office. This letter was dated Oct 9, 1813 and he was writing from Camp Holley.
