Catherine Petty-561

death year may be 1831.
Catherine was involved on June 27th 1786 State of South Carolina against Catherine Petty: Bastrdy. Ordered by the court that the defendant be discharged on her paying the costs. Comment: An individual was not brought to court until the child was weaned, at abt 18 months. Catherine would not have had to pay the fine, if she had named the father of the child. The tender age of the parents would have prompted secrecy during that time period.

Probable father for Solomon J. Petty listed as a child is Lewis Ledbetter, and court record listed above.
Lewis Ledebetter was:
# Birth: 1757 in Brunswick, Prince George, Virginia
# Census: 1790 Union Co., South Carolina

Note from researcher: I have been told that Solomon (b 24 Aug 1784) was really the illegitimate son of Catherine Petty (at 14) and a Ledbetter cousin (at 13).

See the following discussion on Myfamily.com:
Solomon's actual blood line may be the Ledbetter Family.
Are Henry and Winifred the parents of Lewis Ledbetter? And in Wake Co NC?

On Rowland's pension application it states that he was in Wake Co in 1780 when he was drafted.
Henry and Winifred Wall were still in Brunswick Co VA in 1780according to ‘Ledbetter's Revisited.’ Henry, brother to Col. Drury, was born abt 1734 and died abt 1794 in Brunswick, VA. The last record of Henry, found in Brunswick, VA, was in Jan 1780 as executor of his mother's will. Data shows him staying in VA. A Henry Ledbetter died in Brunswick Co in 1794 - it is thought to have been this one.’, but his wife Winnifred, shows up in Pendleton Co SC in 1790 census, he must have died before that; his son, Lewis is on a land deed in SC in 1786.

1783
Henry's daughter Winifred was married in VA: Fothergill, Augusta B., "Marriage Records of Brunswick Co., VA, 1730-1852: Edward King m. Winifred Ledbetter, dau of Henry, 24 Aug. 1783

Winifred Wall Ledbetter and her daughter Mary and a Lewis were in Union Co SC: Henry must have died before then:

Deed to John Ledbetter. Brunswick Co Deed Book 11, page 237.
William Ledbetter and his wife Frances gave their son John Ledbetter 200 acres of land patented to William 15 July1760 and recorded at Williamsburg. John’s brothers James and Isaac witnessed the deed.

William Ledbetter (md Francis Vandiver) & died about 1787, his estate was appraised on 23 July 1787 in Brunswick Co, VA (Deed Book 5, page 213). William gifted John (m Elizabeth) 200 acres in 1774, which would indicate that John was living in Brunswick Co. at that time. Sometime after that, he must have moved to Wake Co, NC, because he sold this same 200 acres in 1779 to William Corbin at which time it was noted in the deed that he was from Wake Co, NC. At the same time in 1774, William sold (gifted) 200 acres to James Ledbetter (John’s brother). James's is recorded in Book 11, page 268, Brunswick Co, VA.: Recorded on 18 Feb 1774. Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr prepared the abstracts of the Brunswick County Wills and Deeds.

Nash Co., NC Deed Book 2, p. 145: 26 November 1789, The State of North Carolina grant to Rowland Ledbetter, by Gov. Sam. Johnston, a tract of 150 acres on both sides of Clark's Branch adjoining John Petticob and John Ledbetter.

1790 Nash Co NC -Halifax District
Letbetter, Rowland............................1-2-4-0-0
Letbetter, John..................................2-3-3-0-0
Letbetter, Holding.............................1-2-4-0-0
Letbetter, John..................................2-3-3-0-0

The 1790 census says that Rowland had 2 male children under 16: Henry b 1787 is the only one I have listed, Could Jesse have been born in 1790 instead of 1791? He would have been only 8 months younger than Henry.
4 females; daughter Nancy b 1787 is the only one I have listed, so he might have had 2 other daughters plus his wife, or some other female relatives living with him. He must have married earlier than the 1787 that is currently given as his marriage date, and there was a James Vaughan living in Wake Co but I have no more info on him.
Holding Ledbetter is thought to have been the son of William and Mary Cheves of Chatham Co NC, but his proximity to John and Rowland makes me think that he was this Johns son and Rowlands brother. This John is most likely William and Francis Vandiver/ Osburn’s son.John and Amy from Chatham Co (s/o Richard and Hannah)had a son named John (see his will 1785), and I believe he was the one in Chatham Co with a wife named Elizabeth. He died in 1791. Then this John must have been the son of William and Francis and also have had a wife named Elizabeth.

Sharolyn Petty Wood -
And a KY reference too:
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.ledbetter/811.1
Millenton Ledbetter was born about 1775 to Lewis and Sarah Ledbetter....he was first noted in numerous records in SC including the will of Lewis Ledbetter. In 1810 the family was in Logan Co., KY. In 1820 & 1830 they were in Franklin Co., TN. He bought land in Franklin Co., in 1813 & 1823. In 1850 Pennine Ledbetter (70) is living with Green Ledbetter, a g-son of Millenton in Wilson Co., TN and in 1870 she is listed as 80 (should be 90) living with Green's sister Jane Hogg in Johnson Co., IL.

Mike Watkins - Jul 21, 2005
After reading this it would be interesting to do a DNA test of a Millenton Ledbetter male descendant and a male descendant from Solomon J. Petty. This would be the only way to answer the question once and for all. This is just my thought but why would Solomon J. Petty name a son Lewis/Louis Ledbetter Petty if not in respect for his grandfather. Mike
Sharolyn Petty Wood - Jul 21, 2005
Agreed....and they couldn't marry because they were both young. And later they married others. The proximity of Solomon and his son Lewis L. Petty and Lewis Ledbetter is very interesting. And the time from what I've read too. So did Lewis Ledbetter come "west" with Solomon and the Petty’s? I think I'd like to read who the neighbors are for Lewis Ledbetter. Sharolyn

Barb McGee - Jul 23, 2005: What date do you folks suggest for a birth date on Solomon J. Petty then? Lawsuit was 27 June, 1786 so the birth was before that date. I have a birth date of 23 Mar. 1784 in Union District, South Carolina.

But I do not have names for the children of Edward Summerford, and Catherine Petty. Since Jerusha Jane Darwin is on some of your lines-do you have better information than I do?
Miss Summerford born abt 1788 Union, N.C
Male-Summerford abt 1795, York, S.C
Female: Summerford abt 1800, York Co.
I do not have references on the Summerford children.

I have that Catherine died in York District in South Carolina,(1830-40) and Edward Summerford died abt 3 July 1838 same place. Neither would have shown on the 1850 Census, but perhaps her children would have shown living with other relatives, or some orphan records might be available.

Mike Watkins - Jul 24, 2005
I really do not know which date to give you. I referenced your date but there is no actual proof I know of. There has been no Cemetery plot found for him. His 1850 Census record shows him 66 making it about 1784. The Court date was 1786 and like John said most went to court after the baby was winged so 1784 looks about right to me. His obituary does note even say.

MR. SOLOMON PETTY
Died at his Residence, in Dickson County, January 29th, 1860, in the 77th year of his age. He was born in Union District, South Carolina, and was married in that country to Jerusha Darwin. Emigrated to Tennessee in 1814. Bro. P. made a profession of religion in the year 1833, and lived up to his profession till the time of his death, and died resigned to the will of God. He has left a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his exit from earth, and especially his braved widow and children, eleven in number, and several grandchildren. Oh, that God would interpose in their salvation that they might say, with David, our father cannot come to us, but by the Grace of God we can go to him.

Jessie lived in Sevier Co., TN where he died did not remain a Quaker.

Conversation with researcher : Jesse Patty has been shown by D. Lansford and many others as the father of three illegitimate sons by Sarah West. I kept pressing for the source and was put off by Mrs. Lansford who seemed confused as to her source and then finally I found a publication where she listed the Vestry Book of Camden Parish as her source. When I read the entry pertaining to Josiah and Obediah West I knew that something was amiss. When Mrs. Lansford was confronted she said that it was in a court record but she didn't have time to find the record which was in her files. I enlisted the aid of William C. Wooldridge, Board member of the Library of Virginia and the author of the two volume book The Wooldridge Family to help me search for court records. The court record supported my assertion that Sarah West's sons were apprentice of Jesse Patey not sons of Jesse Patey.

The three Patty men: Obediah in McMinn County; and Josiah and Zorobabel in Roane County, in the early 1800s, are either the sons of Sarah West and an unknown West father or they are not Sarah sons but sons of yet unknown Patty ancestors but who? It appears to me that Zorobable might be the son of James Patty if he is the same Zorobable who is listed in Quaker Records in East Tennessee. It is likely that Obediah and Josiah are related as they appear in land records, Josiah as surveyor and Obediah as purchaser, plus their children's names are similar while Zorobable's are dissimilar.

I do not generally speculate on the Pattey Family, as I have not gone into detail on their history, but if this information helps someone who is working on this family I place these notes on my site.
