Story in Petty Papers Vol 9 #2 page 63.
" James Monroe Quarles was born October 25, 1825, and was married June 19, 1953 to Miss Nancy Jane Petty, who was born September 1, 1834, daughter of the Primitive baptist church there. They lived for many years in and around Pducah, KY., but in 1882 went to Florida, where his wife died at Hawthorne, on May 12 following and is buried there. They lived for years in and around Paducah, KY., but in 1882 went to Florida, where his wife died at Hawthorne, on May 12 following and is burried ther; her death was followed on June 7th 1883 by their daughter Lanora1 and on June 23 by death of Mary Alice. Lenora wa a music teacher of some accomplishment. Notee by R.E.Q; Although I was only five, the picture and Beauty of this sister made an indelible impression on my mind. I recall her carrying me on her back. She was beutiful to look at, had fair hair and rosy cheeks and was most wholesome to look at. I can not imagine why one so fine and healthy looking shold go.

The famiy returned to Kentucky where Cousin James died on June 24th 1906 age 80 years and eight months, loved and honored by all who knew him. I have met but one of his children, Mrs gainer, at Paducah, KY., in March 1907.

To James M. Quarles and wife were born the following: (spelling as in document)
1. Lanora Isadore 1854 ( May 27) died unmarried in FL at Hawthorn, June 23, 1883.
2. Ralph Petty Quarles born Jun 10, 1855. He read law in KY went to Idaho, locating first at Salmon and later at Boise, after his marriage on November 23, 1881 to Miss Ida May Strow of Benton, KY., born October 22, 1861; he becam a leading lawyer of Idaho and served on the Supreme bench of the state; the last two terms being as chief Justice, and could have been re-elected bby his party but declined to go to Hawii to become Chief Justice, and could have been re-elected by his party but declined to go to Hawaii to become Chief Jusice there for a period of nine years. He was defeated by William H. Borah for the Senate in Idaho because he had always been against the Mormon Church. The mormon church helped elect Borah senator. Judge Quarles was always a staunch democrat. His picture looks very much like that of his grand Uncle Robert H. Hynds.
Cousin Ralph has a happy family, four daughters and one son, as follows: 1. Lucy B. Quarles, born 23 March 1883, died 5 Jue 1894, Benton, KY. 2. Dixie Belle Quarrles, born 8 Nov. 1887 is now Mrs James R. Ancrum, wife of Lieut. Ancrum, U.S. Navy, near Charleston, S. C. and has at least one child.
3, Helen Quarles is now Mrs Geo. T. Claycomb, of Boise Idaho, and has one son, born December 14, named Ralph Petty Q. 4. Ralph Strow Quarles, September 7, 1891. 5. Dorothy Quarles, December 4, 1897. Both now living in California"

Cousin Ralph and wife lost their first born daughter, Lucy Wathen, by being burned to death from her clothing catching fire while playing at Benton, KY on June 5, 1984, aged almost 11 years.
3. Kansas Alva Quarles (Cannie) born March 28, 1838, is now Mrs James M. Gainer. (James has since deceased). They were married at Paducah, KY, June 19 1878. They have two children: Alice Dunlap Gainer, married Fred Fielding (since deceased), Alice was born at Paducah, KY, March 27, 1881. She and Fred had one son Fred, both living now at 1945 Orchard Street, Los Angeles, CA with Cannie. Asa Monroe Gainer, the son to Cannie and James Gainer was born at Boston, MA, Feb. 16, 1887. He is now serving in the Navy and has for years in an honorable capacity. He is married and lives in Los Angeles. I've met Cousin Cannie and her huband James in Paducah. They are very nice people indeed, and she bears a marked Resemblance to her grandma's family, her hands being very small and shaped very much like my fathers.
4. Madera Adellicia Quarles born September 16, 1860, married Reuben Heiser, who later died in Mayfield, KY. (Dora)
5. Mary Alice Quarles born September 10, 1865, died in Florida.
6. Albert Sydney Johnson Quarles, born May 28, 1968. Married in Salmon ID, later moving to Los Angeles, where he died. He left one daughter who is married and living in Los Angeles. Her married name is Elizabeth Q. McKibben, 1465 Houser Blvd., Los Angeles.
7. Gustavus Beauregard Quarles born December 28, 1866 at Paducah, in fact all the Quarles children of James and Nancy were born there. He was for years a centrol figure of Salmon ID, having organized the First National Bank to be organized there and the only World War depression. He has several lovely children and a sheet should be added to this for this family who now live at 5519 Tejunga Avenue, North Hollywood, CA.
8. Horace H. Quarles, born January 20, 1872. He was a fine soldier in the Spanish American War, serving with honor. He was also in the Philippines as well as at Cuba and was at the charge on San Juan Hill. He is married now and lives at 811 Rosguie, Boise, ID. Has a large family of fine children. He married Miss Thursa Wilson. A chapter should be added about this family.
9. Harriet Boswell Quarles born June 10, 1874. Names after a beloved neighbor; she married Wm.B. Davidson December 17, 1902. Later divorced, and now married to Mr. Rol Wyatt, a splendid oldtime farmer, at Mayfield, Graves Co., KY. No children living.
10. Robert Edward Lee Quarles, born May 10, 1878. He is now copying this fine history of the Hynds family for his children, his brother and sisters and a double cousin, Mrs Laura Quarles Wilson of 1644 Addison. Brothers and sisters should all contribute about their personal family histories as should Cousin Laura of Berkleley, CA. Robert taught at the High Schools in Denver, and in the Wolcott Schools in Denver, and in the Wolcott School there for about twenty years. He is a graduate of Denver University with a degree AS and MA. He has three lovely daughters, having married Florence Bradly, June 8, 1905. The daughters are all fine musicians named Virginia Ose, Cellist; Alice Violet, pianist, and Margaret Belle, violinist. They have much honored and a special chapter should be written on them. ( as published in Petty Papers, Vol 9 #2 pp. 63-64. Names, dates and spelling as in article. )
(Note: on Family group sheets many fill in dates such as birth, death and marriages were contributed by Lucy Manson)

Hello:

My relatives were the Hynds family of Tennessee and Atlanta, GA. A member of the Hynds family married into the Quarles family and I have a history, which was written in 1916.

There was a Nancy Jane Petty, born September 1, 1834, daughter of Rev. Ralph Petty of the Baptist Church. She married James Monroe Quarles who was born October 25, 1825. They lived for years around Paducah, KY, but then relocated to Hawthorne, FL in 1882. Nancy Quarles died on May 12, 1883, followed by their daughter, Mary A. on June 7, 1883, and on June 23, 1883, their daughter Lanora I. Quarles. James M. Quarles died at Mayfield, KY on June 24, 1906, aged 80 years and 8 months.

I don't know if this has anything to do with your Nancy Quarles as the initial is different, but the families did live in Tennessee and Georgia.

If you would like a copy of the complete family history that I have, I would be happy to send it to you. It does ramble, and is written in the old-fashioned style, so it kind of goes back and forth and you really need to map things out to understand anything (which I have not done.)

Sincerely,

Mary Jill Clark
