Earliest mention of this Ambrose is in the land and probate recors in the deed of James and Martha Petty to Robert Griffith on Jan 15th 1780, when James and Martha Petty(in Chatham Co., N.C.) They sold 413 acres to Griffith . The deed states that the property followed Petty's old survrey line to a line determined between James Petty and Ambrose Petty (on the north side of Robertson's creek-bordering Richard Drake.) This deed refers only to James Petty's land but implies that both James and Ambrose have homes on it. In 1789, Mar. 25th Ambrose bought the land he lived on and the remaining 52 acres from his Mother and Father.

In 1795 on Oct 1st. Ambrose sold all of his remaining property, 53 acres, on the north side of Robertson's creek bordered by Robert Griffeth and Richard Drake, to John Ramsey. It was all the land he owned in Chatham County.
It is thought that Ambrose went to South Carolina with the rest of the family of James and Martha Petty.
In the 1790 census he had 6 sons of which 3 were in the 16-20 age. and does not appear in 1800 or later census'.
(All of he references to Ambrose Petty from 1800 on seem to apply to the younger Ambrose, son of John Petty.)

Rational on Ambrose Petty Sr. Ambrose died in the 1790's his older sons being married it appears that his youngest sons and daughters move to South Carolina to live with their grandfather and grandmother in UnionCo., The 1800 Census gives evidence of this. When James died in 1806, a boy born 1783/5 moved into his uncle Joshua Petty's home. (Joshua didn't have a son that age as shown in the 1810 census.)When James Petty died in 1806 he left a will naming his son Ambrose. He named him as though he were still alive-however this is no proble, because James also named his deceased son Absalom as though he were alive, and we know that situation is confirmed.
James Petty's son Thamas and Gabriel both married Darwin girls, Gabriel Petty, family came to Tennessee originaly about 1812-1820,

Comment: I've always liked about Joshua when I read the info I'd found was that a step-daughter named a son after him; also the compassion of the education to be taken care of by a step-daughter who he must have trusted with someone who was important to him. S.

Next entry was James Petty, of Union Co., Union Co., SC selling his rights to Peter Culp of Chrisian Co., Ky for a negro slave. { barb"Which James?"{this was as far as I got in my search.)
So, unless we find more relationship to our James Petty, then Joshua Patty {deeds say Petty}who married Aggatha Bullock is a son of Jesse and a grandson of the other James. . PP Vol 1 page 47 gives James Patty or Pattery who settled in Halifax Co., Va abt 1753 and married Sarah a Quaker. His children moved into South Carolina and later TN and Southern Ohio and Indiana.
The father James Patty-Pattey died 6 years after settling in Halifax Co., Va and his son Jesse b ca 17 45 md Delilah .... Will probated, 9 Nov. 9 Nob 1795 in Union Co., N.C. (See Petty Papers vol 1 page 47 for the rest of the sons of this James: another James, & Charles Patty.
Jim Petty's list of people in 1790: 96th District Union Co.- the Patty family is consistently spelled Patty and the Petty family is Petty. I think the 1790 census available to us at the time was typed and not the original hand written.
