I’m satisfied that this is the correct family and I believe that the 1850 census probably gives a more accurate count of the children’s ages while they are in their infancy so we have Jerusha b. ca 1844, Allen b. ca 1846 and the twins Cynthia & Jane b. ca 1848, which you can see clashes with your listing where you show a son, Cable R. Lovell b. 1848. Elizabeth and Crawford Lovell were married on 6 February 1843 by Elizabeth’s cousin, John A. Petty J.P., which would suggest that the two sons John and William were born to them before they were officially married. If the ages on the 1850 census are correct then son John would have been born when Crawford was 18 years old and is likely to be his and Elizabeth’s child as I would not consider that there had been a previous marriage for someone like Crawford then in his youth. However, the problem I see on the 1860 census above is that I had expected to see the children Jerusha (age 16), Allen (age 14) and the twin daughters (age 12), unless there had been several infant mortalities, and if Cable R. Lovell were a son, then he would have been born 1849 at the earliest. We certainly know that the twin Cynthia Lovell lived to adulthood because she is shown aged 28 (should be 32) living with her parents in Hickman Co., Tenn. on the 1880 census:

1880 TENNESSEE CENSUS (Hickman County) p.290
#93 Crawford Lovel H 62 TN Farm Laborer
Elizabeth Lovel W 50 TN Keeping House
Cynthia Lovel D 28 TN Works on Farm
Mary E. Harris GD 12 TN Works on Farm
John H. Mulins GS 10 TN Away From Home
Charley Mulins GS 7 TN
Wm Harris GS 4 TN
Sydney Harris GS 2 TN
M. A. Petty Niece 24 TN Works on Farm

I assume that M.A. Petty is Missouri A. Petty (b. 1853), the daughter of Marvel Mosely Petty and who has managed to lose three years from her age in a similar fashion to her cousin Cynthia! The other point to note on the 1880 census is that Crawford Lovell does not use the initials GW before his name so I really wonder if he actually shows up somewhere else on the 1860 Tenn. census as C. Lovell. It is just conceivable that you could combine the above three census records but the family would have had to farm out the older children on the 1860 census and I think that very unlikely. I haven’t solved the whole picture but I think you will agree that further investigation is required.

So for my future planning I shall only be listing the children shown on the 1850 Tenn. census though no doubt there may be other children shown in 1860 and so on:

i John Lovell b. 1837
ii William Lovell b. 1841
iii Jerusha Lovell b. 1844
iv Allen Lovell b. 1846
v Cynthia Lovell (twin) b. 1848
vi Jane Lovell (twin) b. 1848

I should be interested to know if anyone in your group is interested and actively investigating the descendants of Jerusha Jane Darwin and Solomon J. Petty.

Regards,
Chris

Thanks to Chris for his patience while I try to get the information correct. Barb.

Just thought I would point that out. I was believing it since I could not find Cynthia in another 1870 and 1880 census, but the 1850 and 1860 for Jesse Edney proved it to be incorrect.

Joel Hutto writes:

[PettyGenealogy.com] website had an error on the Redden family. She shows that Cynthia Petty Redden has another spouse after James Redden died. She lists him as Jesse Edney. However, if you look at the 1850-1880 census for Jesse Edney in Dickson County, his wife is named Cynthia, but it is not Cynthia Petty. That Cynthia is with him in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. However our Cynthia Petty Redden is in her own household in 1850 and 1860, so it cannot be the same Cynthia. (Editor Note: Oct 2008 the marriage previously credited is not deleted.)
