had a letter in 1984 from "Jim" stating "that he had located two early deeds in Hickman County. In 1842, the children of Thomas Petty deceased, sold some of the lands of their inheritance. Named were Elisha, William K. Jacob H. Martha Dudley, Mary George, Henry
A. , Louis L., Geoge H., and Elisabeth L. Petty...".4Dick Zieman.
In about 1810, Thomas married Kiziah Albina_____ (I later found out that her name may have been Terry Humble). By 1820, when Thomas first appears in the census, he had 4 sons and two daughters. In 1823, Thomas purchased 100 acres of land from his father. Later in 1828, he purchased some additional neighboring land from Robert Murray. By 1830, Thomas had 6 sons at home and 3 daughters. One son Elisha was newly married and living in Henderson County. In 1840, Thomas was in Henderson County with his son Elisha. The family consisted of 3 sons and 3 daughters. Then he was gone. [Thomas and oldest son Elisha proven in Benton County] In 1841, Thomas Petty Sr., died in Benton County, Tennessee, and left a will. [will is 1841 but he died 1843] But he didn't name his son Thomas. That meant that Thomas Jr. had either died or had previously received his inheritance. But he didn't show up in any 1850 census in any state in the country. I could only assume that he had died. But what happened to his family? One day while trying to figure out who Terry Petty of Hickman County, Tennessee was, I found the answer. Terry Petty appears on the 1850 census of Hickman County, Tennessee as a 60 year old man living with a son George. On either side live two other sons, William K. Petty, and Jacob H. Petty. But I could find no other record of Terry anywhere. Then while searching the deeds of Hickman County, I found two deeds, one in 1842, and the other in 1853. They named William K. Petty, Jacob H. Petty, and George Petty, and others. But the deeds called them the children of Thomas Petty, dec'd. Suddenly it all fit together. [can not do highlights - the 1853 deed calls them the children of Thomas!] I rechecked the 1840 census of Hickman County, Tennessee for Terry Petty. I had seen the name but had not really evaluated it in comparison with the 1850 census. In 1840 Terry Petty was represented as a 50 year old widow! The statistics for the children matched the entry for Thomas D. Petty of Henderson County that same year, minus the youngest son and youngest daughters. Terry Petty was no the father of William K, and Jacob H. Petty, Terry was their mother! Apparently Thomas Petty Jr. died in 1840 in Henderson County. And perhaps his youngest son and youngest daughters also died at the same time. Following their deaths Terry and the rest of the family returned to Hickman County where her other children lived. Later deeds in Hickman County, revealed that the children of Thomas and Terry (or Kiziah) were nephews and nieces of Jacob Jumble of Hickman County. Perhaps Jacob H. Petty was named for him. Jacob Humble appears in the 1850 census with his wife Polina. They were 59 and 61 respectively, and either one could have been the brother or sister to Terry Petty. Also living with them was and older woman, Keziah Dunnigan. This adds weight to the possibility that Terry's proper name could have been Keziah. Keziah Dunnigan was 106 years old! She may have been the very elderly mother of either Jacob or Polina, or even their grandmother.
He came to Tennessee with his parents in 1807 and settled in Dickson Co., Tennessee where he is first found witnessing a deed for his father in 1808. His father purchased 1501 acres on the border of Dickson and Hickman Counties. During the next 20 years they appear in one or the other of the counties.5Sharolyn P. Wood.

There is a cemetery in the Thomas Petty Jr. family that is on a beautiful farm on the Piney River in Hickman Co. When we were there last summer, the Myatt side with one marker was nicely mowed and manicured. The Petty side has many specimens of tall grasses, some flowering, and a wide assortment of insect and crawly critters. It also has many Petty family markers--some inside an ornamental iron fence.

James D. Petty Sr. of TN and TX James D. Petty was the son of Thomas Petty. Family history says that he was one of seven brothers and cousins that left TN for Texas in 1848. He is referred to as James D. Petty Sr. in the Dickson Co court records. [James D. Petty Jr. is his first cousin, son of Gabriel Petty] James D. Petty settled in Navarro Co Texas, and at the time of his death, he owned 1/2 interest in a toll bridge and a store. Here are the probate papers. Jim Petty died on 10 Jul 1857 in Navarro County, Texas. James D. Petty's son, William C. Petty reported that James D. had died on the 10th of July, 1857 and had left no will. This is found in William C. Petty's petition to become the administrator of the estate of James D. Petty. He had an estate probated on 1 Sep 1857 in Navarro County, Texas. He had an estate probated in Oct 1859 in Navarro County, Texas. In the matter of the estate of James D. Petty, his son, William C. Petty filed for and was granted $50.00 for expenses paid for administration of the estate."
