Harvey Doyle Petty served as a private in Company C, 35 Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War. He entered the service on July 3, 1861 in Shelby County. The muster roll described him as 30 years of age, 6ft. 2 in., light hair, light complexion and blue eyes. He was mustered into the service on August 30, 1861 in St. Louis. He was discharged on September 27, 1864 in Springfield. The reason given was that he was severely wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. (See pension papers).
