1Census Record, 1860.
He might be misidentified as William in the 1860 Census.2Researcher.
James, appears on the 1870 and 1880 censuses, aged 10 and 19 respectively, so b. ca. 1860. Ms Watt does not seem to be aware of James, but he appears to definitely be a different person from Winship. I had thought that if I could trace Winship that I might be able to determine if the above is confusion or coincidence. But I cannot find this particular Winship in later censuses. I do, however, find that the TN marriage records on Ancestry.com have a Winship Petty marrying Charloty Green on 12-Feb.-1863 in Dekalb Co., TN. (Dekalb Co. is just south of, and bordering Smith Co.) I haven’t found this particular Winship and wife Charloty or Charlotte in any other data banks so far. Do either of you have any information on one or both of them? Of course, they were married during the Civil War, so anything might have happened. (The Winships I have found who served during the war are: Winship Petty, Co. K, 24 Arkansas Infantry; Winship Petty, Co. H, Hardy’s Reg’t, Arkansas Infantry; and Winship S. Petty, 5 North Carolina Cavalry. But there are hundreds of Pettys who served, many listed only by initials.) Note from researcher: Her grandfather, Floyd Schilling Petty, was indeed brother to my grandfather, William Silas Petty. They were in Chambers County in 1910, but by 1920, William Silas was in Dayton also. Note from researcher: I have just found that Joseph Petty, one of Stephen’s (Smith Co., TX) sons, lived in Precinct 5, Chambers Co., TX in 1900 - all the data on him and his family fits perfectly with Irene Petty Watts’ information. My James Petty was Justice of the Peace for Precinct 5 then. The “coincidences” that link James to Stephen Petty are beginning to become too many to be coincidental!.
In my search for my Petty roots, I’m still trying to untangle the data on Winship and James Petty, sons of Stephen Petty of Smith Co., TN. As I’ve mentioned before, a Petty family researcher - Irene Petty Watt, I believe - has said that Winship (according to the 1850 census, b. ca. 1843) was named James Winship, married Becky Butler and had at least seven children including Floyd, Myrtle, Doyle, Arvin, Mettie, Willie, Oscar.
