"Various records show Isham, son of Davis, to be born between 178- and 1794. He married Polly Wells on 24 Nov 1814 in Pittsylvania county."

• Pittsylvania VA marriage records: Nov. 24, 1814 Marriage in Pittsylvania VA to Polly Wells

• 1820 Census Pittsylvania County VA Northern District-near (Swansonville) , west of Chatham, VA

• 1833-1834 Processioner’s Land Description-Pittsylvania VA-Joseph Wells, John Wells, Joel Wells and Isham Petty are described as neighbors.

• Note: At least three marriages occur between the Wells and Petty families- Davis Petty & Mary Wells, Isham Petty & Polly Wells, and George Wells and Nancy Petty marry in Henry County on May 4, 1809. (New River Valley Notes indicate that Henry County was formed because it was closer for those in western Pittsylvania to do business than in Pittsylvania County. I found three of the Petty family marriages there)

o I feel strongly that Isham M. Petty(Isham #2) b1825 in Pittsylvania Co and Davis M. Petty b. 1820 are brothers-sons of Isham & Polly Petty

1860 Census- Isham (#1-sr) still living alone on the farm in Pittsylvania Co

1.The (Elde)r Isham Petty (#1) still appears on the Census in Pittsylvania County in 1860 living alone on the farm, but no further record has been found of his son Davis M. and his family. There was a Davis Petty of Pittsylvania County in the 38th VA CSA Infantry who died in the Civil War-but was listed as Davis A instead of Davis M. It may still be the same Davis. I found a lot of spelling variations and errors in CSA records. (John Petty 2008).

I finally made the trip to Pittsylvania County, spending a day in the courthouse. I found 1849 property transfer records that Isham M. Petty & wife (Mary Francis), Davis M. Petty & wife (Sarah), Martha Petty Garrett & husband, and James Childress (widower of Mary Petty) sold the land that came to their mother, Polly Petty, from her father Matthew Wells.

Isham served in CSA 36th VA Infantry. Was a prisoner of war, survived and moved to Smyth dounty. VA. died 1882. (Mary's CSA Pensioner Records - UVA).

Isham M. and Mary “Polly” Petty appear on the 1850 census as farmers in Henry County. In 1860 they appear on the Montgomery County Census with their children Sarah, William Davis, Mary and Matilda and 90 yo Rebecca Evans.

Civil War records reflect Isham as joining the 36th VA Infantry CSA-at 39 yo. There are various CSA records for the same man listing him as Isham M, Isom M, Isam M. and Isaac M. Prisoner of war records at Camp Chase Ohio and Wheeling, VA show Isam M. Petty being captured at Peppers Ferry. The same page also shows John Petty being captured at Floyds Mountain.

The family (Isham M. ) does not appear on the 1870 Census-but I found a death record for the daughter, Mary, at age 16 in 1870 in Pulaski County-died of measles.

In 1880 census, the family is in Smyth County. Isom & Mary have a farm on Seven Mile Ford. His son, William Davis Petty has married Nancy Moore-these are my great grandparents. Mary Petty is now dead of measles, but daughters Matilda, Sara, and a daughter Corilla (never appears anywhere again--16 yo) are in the household along with a grand-daughter Mary Ellen Petty b. 1878-daughter of Matilda

In UVA Library I found the 1902 Confederate widow’s pension application from Mary Evins Petty completed by her daughter Matilda Petty Bolt and Matilda’s son-in-law Isaac Sims (Mary Ellen’s husband). It documented Isom as a member of the CSA having enlisted in Montgomery County and died in Smyth County in1882.

In 1900 Census Mary “Polly” Petty is listed as 82 yo. and living with Mary Ellen and Isaac Simms (Matilda’s daughter).

Isom, son William Davis Petty, owned farms in Seven Mile Ford-Smyth Co VA. After William dies in 1917, Nancy sells the two family farms. William is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Seven Mile Ford-outside of Marion VA.
