Examining Surgeon
I certify on honor that I have carefully examined the above named soldier and that in my opinion, he is free from all bodily desease and mental infirmity, which would in any way, disqualify him from performing the duties of a soldier. I certify on Honor that I have minutely inspected the soldier, George W. Petty previously to his enlistment and that he was entirely sober when enlisted; that to the best of my judgement and belief, he is of lawful age and that in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able-bodied soldier. I have strictly observed the regulations which govern the recruiting services.
The soldier has blue eyes, auburn hair fair complexion, is 5 feet 10 inches high. Recruiting Officer Received from the Confederate States of America, by the hands of Capt. Wm. Colby
(he had marked thru William B. Ochiltree and signed his name), this 10th day of February 1863. Fifty dollars, being by way of Bounty for enlisting in the Army of the Confederate States for three years or the War.

G. W. Petty His pay vouchers show him as "Private". Note from Sondra: After visiting and copying the Civil War records of G.W. Petty, I found he was 26 in June of 1862 when he enlisted at Coffeeville, Upshur Co., TX. Also in this same unit is E.M. (Elijah Mack) Turner, brother of G.W.'s wife, Talitha M. Turner. The regiment they were in was the 18th TX. Inf., Co. H. They mainly were in Louisiana and Ark. During mid 1864, the 18th TX. Inf. was returned La. Here it served at Shreveport. In early 1865, the unit was moved to Hempstead, TX. There unit was listed as being in the surrender of several troops in Galveston when Lee surrendered in 1865. However, according to a book, which I forgot to copy at this time, said this unit had already disbanded after they were sent to Hempstead, TX. I recently found a letter on the Internet, written by a Mr. Porter that served with this Co., that G. W. Petty was also in and in it, Mr. Porter states they did disband at Hempstead. He also tells that he and 3 of his companions, one of them named was G. W. Petty, left Hempstead and headed home when they were dismissed.
On his pay voucher of Jan. 1864, it states he was on furlough since 24 Jan. for 48 days. His papers for his enlistment and Dr.'s checkup, it shows he is in good condition and of sound mind. It also states he had blue eyes, auburn hair, fair complexion, and was 5 ft. 10 in. in height. Note: Is this George Washington Petty, son of John M. and Hannah Petty?
1860: Living with the family of J.A. McPeak age 39 VA.,and his wife Mary 31 GA., on the 1860 census of Upshur County, Texas are two Petty males, George, age 26 and born 1834 in Tennessee and Thomas, age 6 born in Texas.

Talitha Petty Stilwell (you have her listed as Tabitha Petty Stilwell - 3802), I know that her proper name was Talitha, and not "Tabitha," as she was named after her mother. And for her husband, Andrew Thomas Stilwell, you have him listed as Andrew Thomas Stillwell - 56636, a Stilwell with two L's in the middle, instead of one L. All of that family line uses the spelling of Stilwell. I know on some census records they have Talitha listed as "Telitha," but they usually have the correct spelling of Stilwell for both of them. Also, you have Talitha Petty Stilwell's father as George Wesley Petty, and I was given to understand that it was George Washington Petty, who had served as a Confederate soldier. Also, you have Talitha Petty Stilwell's son listed as "Ander Concho (nickname "Cap")" while my information shows him as Andrew Concho. Also you have listed Nata Stilwell and my information shows Neter (my family pronounced it like "Nita," but with an "R") Stilwell.4Marriage Record.

From Tamytha Hopkins 7/14/10: States that #9 child is spelled Neter but the family pronounced it Nita. but with an "R" Stilwell. (Nitr) Stilwell.
1Sharolyn P. Wood.
On her tombstone, it states she was the daughter of J. F. and M. F. Young. This would make her Grandma Fannie Young's daughter and not her stepdaughter, and not the daughter of Elizabeth, James Franklin's first wife.
