Theophalus and Charlotte migrated to Texas about 1848 accompanied by the families of their two married daughters, Clarissa (Petty) Drake and Elizabeth (Petty) Woodward. They first settled in Milam Land District, part of which later became Milam County, and were there in the 1850 census. In Bell County latter part of 1850/51. By the census records of 1860, Theophalus and Charlotte had moved to Bastrop County where other family members, descendants of John Petty from Hickman County Tennessee, had settled and established the Pettytown community <http://www.onr.com/user/joepetty/pettytwn.htm>. Charlotte Petty-50593

1Bobbie Haydon, bah at moment.net.
"Marr: 8 February 1803, Madison Co. Ky, Thomas WELCH, Bondsman

1846-1848

Volunteer, U.S. Federal Service, Mexican War. Enlisting with the First Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers. (Texas Rangers) First served with Company E, recuited at Cedar Springs, Falls County Texas from July 1846 to September 1846. In John Long's Company, recuited in San Antonio, Texas from May 1847 to June 1847. Re-enlisted for 12 months in Company H, recuited in Austin, Texas from June 1847 to June 1848, serving under Capt. James S. Gillet. These companies saw battle on the Rio Grande, and also lost several of their men in skirmishes with the indians.

1849-1850

Married Charlotte PETTY, 1849 in Bexar Land District.

They appear on 1850 census for Milam County indicated by * as married within the census year. Jordan listed as ferryman and Charlotte as "keeping house".

Charlotte, b about 1824 in Butler County Kentucky, and believed to be the third child of Theophalus and Charlotte (SORRELLS) PETTY. This PETTY family coming from Butler County Kentucky also appear on same census of Milam County and are in Texas by 1849. Although both Jordan and Charlotte were born in Kentucky there are no records to indicate that they arrived Texas together or even knew each other.

1851-1854

Appears on tax rolls of Bell County Texas. Bell County established in latter part of 1850 from division of Milam Land District.

1859

According to Mexican War pension family lived six years in Bell County, one year in Lampasas County and one year in Bastrop County.

NOTE: Charlotte's family in Bastrop County 1860.

1860-1870

Appears on census of Burnet County Texas.

The Civil War period saw emphasied activity on the part of indian raiders, and a wave of lawlessness that accumpanied and followed the war. As early as 1861, some of the men of the county had organized into ranger forces to protect their homes and the homes of their neighbors from raids. Jordan was a member of the Ridge Company of Infantry (militia) under the leadership,Captain A.J. Ridge. Organized October 1861. Later he was in Company Three under Captain G.C. Bettie, organized January 1864. Ref. Ranger Muster Rolls, Lone Star Guards, Texas Archives, Austin Texas, and in the History of Burnet County by M.G. Bowden.

1875

Purchased 160 acres along the east bank of the Colorado River near McAnnely's Bend. This land,a part of the William Hargrove 640 acre headright was purchased from the heirs John Giddings for the sum of $42.00. Deed states that Jordan Wyatt had been living on this land for "many years". Burnet Co. records, bk J page 110.
Farming and ranching was the main way of living in that area and Jordan was primarily a farmer, but he did run a few cattle under the brand WY. It was on this farm that Jordan and Charlotte raised 5 boys and 2 girls:
William Bell Wyatt,b 1851
Andrew Jackson Wyatt,b 1853
Isom R. Wyatt, b 1856
Susannah Wyatt b 1859
Mary Charoltte Wyatt, b 1860
Jordan Wyatt,III, b 1866
Marcus Wyatt, b 1869

Across the river and a little downstream of the WYATT farm was the town of "old" Bluffton, destined to be moved to a new townsite to make room for Buchanan Lake in 1936, was at this time in history a thriving little community. A hotel, cafe, feed store, grist mill, and a ferry operation was among its establishments. It also boasted quite a saloon and cowboys "shooting up" the town was not uncommon.

Many of the pioneers of Bluffton have decendents remaining in the area today. Among them are the HERRIDGE's, a family allied with the Wyatts by marriage.

1889-1896

Charlotte died on July 5, 1889.
Jordan died on March 4, 1896.

Both are buried in Tow, Texas in Llano County. Their stones still stand and are legible. NOTE: Jordans gravestone records date of death as 1898, but he was dropped from the pension role in 1896, stating death of pensioner. It is my belief that the mistake is on the gravestone.

1Sharolyn P. Wood.

Mentioned as purchasers at the sale of estate assets were John Dillard and Ozburn Dillard, who are assumed to be his sons and Keziah Dillard, known to be his wife, who was named as administrator of his estate that same month. Keziah was the daughter of William Petty Sr. also of Chatham County. William Petty Sr. was appointed guardian to Lavinia Dillard, "orphan of William Dillard, deceased" in February, 1783 (see CHATHAM COUNTY COURT OF PLEAS AND QUARTER SESSIONS (1781-1785)). From this we can reasonably assume that William Dillard died in Chatham County, NC.

Along with John and Ozburn, other Dillard males documented as having resided in Chatham County between 1773 and 1790 were a second William, Elisha, and Willis, all possible sons of the elder William Dillard and Zachariah who came to Chatham County from Halifax County, NC after 1783. All of the above moved to Middle Tennessee between 1793 and 1810 and settled in the Sumner, Smith and Wilson County area.

From the records above, I believe that the Thomas Petty, who died in Henderson County, Tennessee was the son of, William and Mary Hamblet Petty. I realize that others differ from this assumption, and that is ok.
