John A. Petty History by Linda A. Snideir Reid and Charles Lee Reid Jr. " Father of John A. "Joel" born Circa 1779 in North Carolina, and died circa 1899 in Tennessee. Teh father of John A. Petty Jr . name is in question. Literature on the Petty's refers to the father as Jol. However a primary source docment for John Al. Petty husband of Elizabeth Dawson Petty shows John A. using the word junior, after his name. This may indicate that John A.'s father would be John A Senior. (Editor's note: Junior does not always denote father relationship. It can mean any other John A. living in the general vicinity who bears that name.) Herafter, the father's name is used by Linda and Charles Reid as Joel.

Using the geealogical record of Joel and his sons, Theophilous and John we can loosely reconstruch or speculate on the early live and married life of Joel Petty. Joel wa born in North Carolina, as was his son Theophilous. The assumption might be made that Joel married his wife in North Carolina. However it is not known if Theophilous was the oldest child or not. The Joel Petty's were living in Nort Carolina until 1800.

They must have gone west shortly -moved to Kentucky or Tennessee. John Petty seems to be 1-2 years younger than Theopholis. Most Petty Historians note John Petty was born in Tennessee. John does state in the 1850 census, Carroll County that he was born in Kentucky. We know, if not directly Joel and his family came to Tennessee eventually. Theophilous remained or later moved to Kentucky. Theophilous remaned or later moved to Kentucky as he had many children born in Kentucky from 1832-1848

Children named by Linda and Charles Reid are:
Jonathan Petty born in Tenn.
Theophilous Petty
Joel Petty Jr. Born in TN. Md Julie XXX Petty
Hubert Petty Born in TN Married Hulda XXX Petty
Dock Petty Born in TN. He married Rendy XXX Petty

1Nelda Breazeale.
Ann Catherine came to Texas as a widow but later married Levi Pogue. No children were born to this union. She outlived her brothers and sisters by 14 years. It was from her that much of the Petty history was heard. She had many experiences during the Civil War. One was of driving a wagon through the Confederate Army line all day with her Northern husband hidden under a big wooden tub. The wagon was searched several times but they never found him. It is said that Ann Pogue never had a headache nor ever took a dose of medicine in her long life. She never got nervous nor in a hurry about anything. The thought of death didn't worry her at all. At the ripe old age of 91 years she went to bed and slept her last hours away. She is buried in Willow Creek Cemetery in Lavaca Co., TX.
