The John Petty family was in Texas by 1850. It is speculated that our John Petty may be the same one who secured the Spanish Land Grant of 177 acres as a member of Stephen Austin's colony (Vol 2 pg 384, Spanish Archives, General Land Office, Austin, TX), approved 7 Aug 1824. At the time his wife and children were living in Hardin Co., TN. It is also thought John may have fought in the TX revolution as a TN volunteer, moving his family to the Ozark Mt region of Carroll Co, ARK near Berryville, Osage Twp abt 1832.

"This John Petty is not to be confused with the John Petty who was one of Stephen. F Austin's Old Thre Hundred clonistis in the 1820's. . . . Our John Petty came to Texas after the mid to late 1840's to early 1850's from Arkansas."

Possibly born in McNairy Co., TN. Pettytown (later part of Red Rock) was names for John A Petty and wife Elizabeth. They came there from McNairy Co., TN. John Petty owned 132 1/2 acres of land in McNairy Co. in an area called the Little Hatchey. Around 1835 he sold his land and moved to the Ozark area of Arkansas and Missouri. There they became friends with the Queens, Fowlers, Baizes and Williams' families. These families moved together to Texas and settled near each other. It is said that John fought in the Texas Revolution. He probably moved to Texas before 1850 and shows up in the 1860 census in Bastrop County. He owned considerable land in both Bastrop and Caldwell counties.10John Petty, jpetty2000 at msn.com (as of 2005).

"Pg.243 : under the heading of the Queen Family .... mentions brothers Samuel & Elias Queen marrying Petty sisters.....continued on pg.243 : Elias B. Queen m. Edna Petty in Ark. 1841 , they had one son Samuel. Edna died between 1843 & 1846 as Elias remarried 1847 ...... do not see mention of other Petty sisters name that brother Samuel married. It does say these Queen people traveled by way of Milam Co , Tx. arriving in about 1847."
