He was the last child born to his parents. He lived with his parents for quite a while, moving with them to Brewster (Thomas Co.) KS, Allendale, Worth Co., MO for a while then moved back to Brewster. He married a Jennie Chesire in 1894 and had a son, Jimmie, in 1896 (we think, the papers just said a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Petty). They had a bitter custody battle over Jimmie and she got him. Jimmie then disappeared from the scene as did Jennie. Then somewhere between 1897 and 1899 when my father was born, Purley went into the Army for the Phillipine Insurrection, married Mae Andrews (my grandmother), mustered out in San Francisco, and a month later my father. . . was born. Mae apparently left Purley. Purley took my father back to his mother's in Brewster to be raised. The last I know of Purley is that he may have died in 1923.
He started to go by the name Burt Pettie soon after the turn of the century
"Dawn Wheat and I suspect there may have been a 3rd child but we have no further info on that." (11 Mar 2002).2Barbara McGee, editor, Petty Papers, Vol 2 #3 pg 60.
