Stephen Petty Jr named a son Winship S. Petty. We speculate that the S stood for Stedman. We can not assume that is his middle name w/o further proof, but if someone comes across that proof in a document it would be interesting to know. Could it be for a near relative?5Notes.

Zachariah Sr. was born abt 1782 Orange Co., Va and married Polly Kendel on 26 Mar 1804 in Orange Co. He died June 20, 1857 callaway Co., Mo.
The Stephen Petty that married Martha Howell, is actually a Stephen Petty jr. His parents were Stephen Petty and Laura Dillard, of Chatham Co., NC. The Stephen Petty that married Sarah Carr, and lived in Smith Co., TN. is the son of William Petty and Lavinia Dillard. This William Petty and the Stephen Petty SR. were brothers. Both are sons of the Rev. soldier, John Petty, of Chatham Co., NC. I don't know which wife, of this John Petty, that would be their mother but John's wife at his death was Martha Saunders.6Marriage Bonds, North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868.
