John Clinton Pettey-37741

1Lois Jane Pettey.
"John Clinton Pettey was the 7th child of 9 born to John and Huldah Macomber Pettey. He was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio on the 13th of January 1836. His brothers and sisters are: Abner, Samantha, Harriet, Perry, Justina, Elsinus, Marvin and Cordelia.. About 1841 or 42, John and Huldah decided to cast their lot in the west and moved their family to York Township, Dane County, Wisconsin. Of the 9 children only 6 were left to accompany them to Wisconsin. Harriet, Perry and Justina died in Ohio. Samantha married a man named Sayr and died shortly after her marriage. Marvin died at the age of 15, about 1853 in Wisconsin.

John Clinton attended public school and after completion, he entered the University of Wisconsin, where he pursued his studies. However, he chose faming for his life occupation. On December 2nd, 1858, John Clinton married Miss Betsy Thompson of Jefferson County. They were married at the bride’s home. Betsy was born in Lincolnshire, England on the 30th of April 1838 and came to America with her parents, Robert and Abigail Cole Thompson. John Clinton’s father, John Pettey, died in 1868 at the age of 72.

In 1871 John Clinton and Betsy Pettey moved the family to Kansas and located in Jefferson County until the following spring. He then moved to Washington County, where he homesteaded 80 acres of land. He sold that land and bought 160 acres on section 32 of Little Blue Township, Washington County, Kansas. He developed his land to the best advantage and erected a fine residence. He was interested in live stock, keeping good grades of cattle, horses and swine. John Clinton was a quiet and unassuming man, mixing comparatively little in public affairs. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge in Barnes Kansas. Huldah Macomber Pettey, his mother, died in 1883 at the advanced age of 82.

John Clinton and Betsy Pettey had 5 children, Ophelia, Florence, John, Jennie and Minnie. Before his death on 19 February 1914, John Clinton saw two of his children marry. Ophelia married William Hallowell, a farmer of Washington County Kansas. They had two children, Florence and Bessie. His second child, Florence, married Clarence Snyder, an engineer of Washington County, Kansas. She died on the 4th of October 1884 leaving 3 children, Florence, Grace and Laura.

John Clinton Pettey wrote that his father, John, had been a seafaring man during his early manhood and a captain of a lake vessel. He also states that his father, John Pettey was a solider in the War of 1812.
In the article, he says that his paternal grandfather was William Pettey, likewise a sailor by profession and commander of a war ship during Revolutionary times.

The Pettey family was first represented in America prior to this, coming over from England in the early colonial days.

We have not been able to prove the fact that John Pettey was in the War of 1812, or that William Pettey was a commander of a war ship during Revolutionary times, or when the Pettey family came to America.

We do know, however, that William Pettey was born in Vermont and he moved his family to Jefferson County, New York where John Pettey was born. In an article about Henderson, New York where the family resided, its early history says that William Pettey came from England. He was a farmer in New York and when John Pettey, along with several of his siblings, moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio, William went along.

It is assumed that William died in Ohio, since he never came to Wisconsin with John or his other siblings. Unfortunately, Ohio has no death records of William Pettey."
