"Christopher Petty Jr. will of County of Richmond and Parish of Farnham, being very sick, but of perfect sense and Memory, thanks be to God for it. The T. in Joseph Petty's name is listed in his documents as a {T} and is his "Mark." During that early period, people often designated a letter in their name indicating it was their MARK. They used the mark like one would use the designation of a thumb print, or like Jr. and Sr. were also used. If there were 2 people living in the same area, at the same time period, they used the Mark-in his case a Capital T. When he died, then another person could use that mark.
