Husband and wife were double 1st cousins

James and Harriet Petty had 10 children. James was a local building contractor of Abbeville. He built homes and stores in Abbeville, and rice mills in other towns. His most notable structure is the Bank of Abbeville & Trust Co. building. James A. Petty served on the town council for several years, beginning in 1890. He died of a heart attack. He was 78 years old.
James and Harriet Petty's children where born in Abbeville, Vermillion Parish. They later moved to Crowley, Acadia Parish, LA. before moving to New Orleans, LA. Burial: Metairie Cem. Petty Headstone Ave. "P".

Van Petty is buried in an old abandoned cemetery which is being restored for historical purposes. His monument is 3' x 5' and says Sylvanus, Son of J. A. and H. E. Petty Aged 14 years. It is in grave site # 45. The records indicate that Van drowned while "bathing" in the Vermilion Bayou, at the railroad wharf on June 16, 1895 in Abbeville, LA. Burial: June 1895, Old Masonic Cemetery, Abbeville, LA, age 14.
