The T. in Joseph Petty's name is listed in his documents as a {T} and is his "Mark." During that early period, people often designated a letter in their name indicating it was their MARK. They used the mark like one would use the designation of a thumb print, or like Jr. and Sr. were also used. If there were 2 people living in the same area, at the same time period, they used the Mark-in his case a Capital T. When he died, then another person could use that mark.
