He was the oldest son of Solomon K. and Sophrina (Mefford) Petty born in 1852 in Frankfort Town, Pike Co., MO. He was described as an easy going mild mannered, even tempered, good natured, fair & honest man with a deep love for his family & his land. "An exceptionally good man" was the remarks of those who knew him personally."

He was named after his brother caleb Mefford who had married his father's sister, Cinderella Jan Petty. He had five sisters and two brothers.

Sophronia, Caleb's mother and Samuel his brother died sometime between 1870 & 1875, as Solomon was living in Ozark Co., MO in 1877 he married Elizabeth T.Sisney, the sister of Caleb's wife Amanda. We have been told that Sophrinia was burried in Frankford so her Samuel may hae died in an epidemic of some kind, since they both dropped out of site.

Caleb married Martha Amanda Sissiny, a young widow woman with 3 cildren in 1876. They lived in Ozark Co., MO until 1881. By this time they had 2 daughters, Ellizabeth So;hronia (Named after her grandmother and step-grandmother). and Louisa Dazerine (named after her aunty and great-grandmother). They moved to Barry County , Missouri to a 160 acre homestead where they had two sons, William thomas and Isaac Robert by 1883.

When Isaac was about 3 yrs old, Caleb came down with pneumonia. When it looked as though he would not recover, he asked his wife, Amanda to make him a promise that she would bury him on this homestead. He died a few days later, and Amanda did as he had requested and buried him on his land.
