Andrew Jackson Petty joined the Civil War at the old Phildelpha Church of Lafayette County, Mississippi. He was injured during the Civil War, and had to have his foot amputated. Some time later, he walked some four hundred miles from Georgia, to Pontotoc County in Mississippi, and buried both his father in February of 1865, and his mother on July the fourth 1865. Both, his father and mother (Luke Petty and Mary Coward) are buried in the "Old Covered Wagon Cemetery", in Lafayette County, Mississippi.
