IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Stokley Towles of the County of Callpepper and Parish
Will: Stokley Towles, Brumfield Parish, Culpeper Co, VA (1757)
of Brumfield, being sick and weak of body but perfect in sence and memory, thanks be to God for the same, do make this my last will & testament in form and manner as followeth, to wit: Item: I give and bequath to my son Joseph Towles my dividend of land begining at the mouth of the Little Run and runing from thence the several courses up the said run to the mountain ground, from thence the hollow to John Laytons line to him his heirs and assigns. And the rest of the land which I had of Thomas Walker from the south side of Thomas run and so up the run the several courses to the said John Laytons line, I give to Isaac Medley, his heirs and assigns. Item: I give to my youngtest son Henry Towles the old negro man named Charles to
him and his heirs. Item: I give to my well beloved wife Jane Towles and the two children which I had by her, Mary Towles & Henry Towles, three feather beds and furnature. Item: I give to my wife and the two children I had by her fourteen head of cattle such as she thinks proper; and likewise all my sheep, horse and main bridles and saddles, cart and wheels; also my crop of tobacco, corn and wheat and all other grain with all the fodder; and likewise all the goods that I have sent for to Liverpool by Capt. Grayworth; all my hoggs & the crop of cotton. Item: I give to my wife and the two children I had by her, my chest of draws, walnut chest, one looking glass, three iron pots, such as she thinks fit to chuse; also two scillets and two tables and half my chairs to her liking; and half of my pewter and all my tin pans and all my bee hives and all my wodden ware with all fowls and all the fowles upon the plantation and all the beef and bacon that is killed in the house and about four pistoles I have owing to me which I desire for to give him learning; and two spining wheels, one linnin wheel and the other a woollen one; and three glass bottles. And if either of the two children: Mary Towles or Henry Towles should die before they come to man and womans estate, that part of the said estate shall (go?) to the other; and my desire is that the rest of my estate, except the above mentioned legacies, may be equally divided amongst all my children, old and young, but I desire that the said estate may not come to an appraisement. And I appoint Spencer Bobo and my wife Jane Towles Executor and Executress to this my Last Will and Testament. AS WITNESS my hand this fifteenth day of January 1757.

Thursday, the 15th day of December 1757 This Last Will & Testament of Stokley Towles, dec'd, is this day exhibited to the court by Jane Towles, widow, and Executrix therein named, which was proved by the oaths of John Layton & Thomas Layton, witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded, Spencer Bobo, the other Executor in the Will mentioned personally appeared before the County, refused to take the burthen of the execution thereof, and on the motion of the said Jane, a Certificate is granted her for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form, she having taken the oath of an Executor & given bond & security as the law directs.
