Bluford Petty was born in 1806 in North Carolina. In the 1850 census for Chatham County North Carolina Bluford list his occupation as an Overseer and also owned real estate that was personally valued at $212 dollars. His wife was named Nancy and she was born in 1808. Bluford as well as his wife could read and write and 3 of their children were attending school. There must have been some musical training in the home because during the Civil War, two of the sons were musicians. Bluford was listed as best man when Jesse Rogers and Mahaly Crutchfield married on 27 Mar 1832. He also was best man at the marriage of Stanford Petty and Nancy Self on 12 Oct 1833. Bluford and Nancy saw all 4 of their sons fight during the Civil War and all returned with Jesse the only one be wounded.
