Petty, George Washington. Born at Murfreesborough, Tennessee, April 7, 1812. He emigrated to Texas in October, 1835, qand located at Coles settlement, now Independence, Washington county. He served in the army from March 1 to May 30, 1836. (Service Record No. 7112.)

After the battle, Mr. Petty returned to the camp of refugees at Groce’s Retreat where he first met Marium Wood, whom he later married. They settled at Brenham where they reared a family of eight children, four sons, two daughters and two nephews.
Mr. Petty died July 27, 1901. He was buried at Brenham. He was a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Note: Came to Texas in 1835. Served in Texian Army 3-1 to 6-1-1836, Captain Hill’s Company, fighting at San Jacinto. Note: G. W. Petty was a member of Captain William W. Hill's Company at San Jacinto. On 1-4-1841, he was issued Donation Certificate No. 1107 for 640 acres of land for having participated in the battle. On 5-24-1838, he received 320 acres for having served in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836.
On an original roll of Captain Hill's Company it is stated that Mr. Petty was enlisted at the home of Asa Mitchell by Captain Joseph P. Lynch. He was described as being five feet, ten inches in height; of fair complexion, with grey eyes and black hair. Note: One account says Mr. Petty died during services at a revival meeting at Alexander Camp Grounds at Kenny, Austin County, Texas July 27, 1901. A newspaper account says that he died on a trip from his home in Brenham to his daughter’s home in Hempstead on July 2nd, and the year must have been 1900..
