He left NC in 1811 and traveled on horsevack through the Cumberland Gap to Indiana. It is said he made 9 trips back and forth to NC before he finally settled east of Cambridge City in Indiana. Josiah married Sarah (Sally) Sheets of Scotch descent from Ohio i 1817. Sarah died in 1850 and Josiah 10 Aug 1878. They are both buried at the Salem Church Cemetery where their son David's family is buried.

Tombstone reads: Farewell my wife and children all,
From you, a father, Christ doth call.
Mourn not for me, it is in vain,
To call me to yourself again.

That being too confining, he learn the shoemaker's trade, and then was was the custom, went from house to house and made shoes for families. After reaching his majority, he worked by the day for one season and then rented a farm for three years. Next, he bought eighty acres of land which he improved and susequenly sold for double what he paid, and bought the property where he finally settled. He added to it from time to time until he had 200 acres.

His wife Rhoda and his wife Ann Wright were cousins.
