"On the side of the road near Blutcher's Ford, Madison Co. Al, William and Lucretia Wright Pettey's tombstone inscriptions provide the record of their births and deaths as follows: 'IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM PETTEY BORN MAR.13 1764 DIED SEPT.26 1834' AND 'IN MEMORY OF LUCY PETTEY, BORN JUL.7,1765, DIED AUG.16,1842.' Not until years after seeing the two lone Pettey monuments beside the road did the writer learn the reason for their isolation. It was reported in 1971 by Mrs. Virginia Mae Walker Esslinger, a descendent, that Lucy Pettey, realizing that she would be at home for the rest of her life, wanted William buried where she could see his grave from the window by which she sat. After her death she was buried by his side. No one else was ever buried there, and the home was finally destroyed. Had it not been for the protest of the local chapter of the D.A.R., the graves would have been destroyed also when the road was widened for paving." We found these graves about a year and a half ago, and took pictures. Thinking we would not be back that way again, we did not record in detail how we got there, but here goes! They are in Madison Co. just south of New Market (a very small town). We came into New Market from the north, I think it was hwy.65. We drove through the town and just as we got south of it there was a small country store, with antiques, etc.on the right. I went in and said we were trying to find two lone gravesites and, before I could elaborate, she said, Oh, you must be talking about the Petty Monuments! She, herself had just happened upon them and wondered about them. As near as we can remember she directed us to keep going south a short way and turn right(west) at the next road. We drove until we passed a cemetery and took the next left. Once you turn left keep your eyes open because it was not far. They are at the top of about a five foot embankment on your left. From the files of: Susan Elrod - Jul 7, 2002 The "Daisy" that gave the info on Zachariah and Nancy Petty being Quakers from England who settled at Dobson's Corners was my Great Aunt Daisy Belle Petty (1880-1963) of Wayne Co. IN. and was the granddaughter of David and Rhoda Shaw Petty. She gave me this same information which I used to start my research into the Petty family. I checked every source of Quakers in NC and could not find them. I finally made contact with the Historical Society in Surry Co.,NC. Due to some leads they gave me, I sent for late 1700's and early 1800 copies of the Petty Meeting House (or Flat Rock Baptist Church) minutes in, now, Yadkin Co., NC. Rev. William Petty was the minister. For several years Zachariah and Nancy are listed as members and Zachariah is listed with his brothers and sisters, as the children of William Petty, when William died in Clarke Co. KY. in 1804 ( will probated May 1805). Some of Zachariah's children went to Ohio and IN (Josiah, my ancestor, and at least two of his siblings). Another went to Alabama and one to Fannin Co. GA the other siblings I haven't traced with certainty. I feel that Zachariah and Nancy may have lived with some of these other sons or daughters in their later years and may have been buried with them. Hopefully someone will read this and have an answer for me. I hope this corrects some of the misconceptions you were given about the above info. Also, the dates you gave from the Family Bible were meant to be complete birth dates. In other words- Josiah Petty was born May 10, 1790 (not d. 1790) I have tombstone pictures and information for Josiah, David and David's wives from Salem Baptist Church in Wayne Co. IN.
