Thomas PETTY born about 1786 in N.C. married in Wake Co., N.C., Feb 11, 1811 to Lydia (MAINARD) MAYNARD born in N.C. 1795. The marriage record is to be found on page 400 of "Wake County Marriages" in the North Carolina State Library at Raleigh, N.C. and gives Gibson MAINARD as the bondsman and William HILL as a witness. This, of course, is (3) a record of the purchase of the marriage license. I believe, but cannot prove, that Gibson MAINARD was Lydia's father. He shows as having paid tax on 300 acres of land in N.C., Wilkes County. A Gibson MAINARD is in Tenn. by 1830. Lydia (MAINARD) MAYNARD had a sister Serena MAYNARD who married Allen HULL, distinguished statesman from Tenn. He was Sec. of State under Franklin D. ROOSEVELT.

Thomas PETTY and Lydia MAYNARD had two daughter and eight sons. I have tried very hard to find out something about those two daughters but know only their names - not even where they were born. I think their brothers must have loved them for several PETTY daughters were given the names of these two girls. Between the years 1827-1834 Thomas PETTY and his wife Lydia move the family across the mountains into Tenn. where two more sons were born.

Rev. John Petty-4347

John stated that he was born in 1756. His son Stephen asked permission of a court to advertise for the heirs to get therir permission to seel a slave; this record names the heirs of John Petty and states that they are all out of State except Stephen the petitioner and James (1737) See Chatham Co., deeds (1774?).

John was married twice, perhaps three times. His surviving widow was Matha Sanders. John was a soldier in the American Revolution. He served from Pittsboro District, NC. He remembered serving under both Capt. Clark and Gholson. He recalled being in the Battles of Cane Creek, NC and Lindley's Mill in 1781. John had 12 children. When he died all except three (James, Stephen, and Elizabeth) lived in another state. Not having exact birthdates, I am presuming that Stephen is the eldest. Stephen lived in NC and administered his father's estate. The archives of Chatham Co., NC show that he made petition to be allowed to sell some property of his father who died intestate. In this, he named the other children and some grandchildren as tenants in common.

"On Sept 19 1832, John Petty mad application for a pension through the clerk of the court at Pittsboro. of ill health he was unable to recall exact dates, places, and tours of service. The only names he could remember were Capts Golston and Clark. He distinctly recalled he was in the Battle at Lindley's Mill on Cane Creek.

On this the 19th day Aug. AD 1832, personally appeared in open Court before the Honorable Judes of said now sitting, Stephen Petty made an oath that he lived in the house of John Petty, his Father, during the Revolutionary War. That he was very young at the time, and has no distict recollection of his father's service in the War of the Revolution, and has no doubt but that he was a soldier in the same. He further states that about (info missing) ago his father rec'd a paralytic stroke, since, which time he has been quite infirm and his memory has forsaken him."

"John PETTY, son of Thomas PETTY, and under age in 1766 was born about 1756, died 1837. His surviving widow was Martha SANDERS. John was a soldier in the American Revolution. He served from Pittsboro District, N. C. Remembered serving under both Capts, Clark and Ghoulston. Recalled being in the battle of Cane Creek, N.C. and Lindley's Mill 1781. John PETTY had twelve children and when he died all except three (James, Stephen and Elizabeth) lived in another state. Not having exact birthdates we are presuming that Stephen was the oldest son, at any rate, he seems to have devoted time and attention to his father in his old age and it was Stephen who administered the estate, advertising for the absent children."

"Nancy was the eldest child in the family of John and Jane (Bland) Darwin and married Jeptha Harrington on 17 January 1800, which was 18 days short of her sixteenth birthday. Some records show her marriage date as the day before which is most likely when the marriage bond was taken out but the Darwin/Bland bible record shows the date Jan 17th 1800 which is what I’ve indicated. Her husband Jeptha, along with his younger sisters Delilah & Charity, moved with his parents Drury and Rachel Harrington from Chatham Co., NC, to Union Co., SC, in 1779 when Jeptha was four years old during the upheaval of the War of Independence of which the children would have been hardly aware. Drury volunteered for service as a soldier throughout the war from 1776 in N. Carolina, as well as re-enlisting again in S. Carolina after his move (Pension Record is filed under S.6979 at the National Archives). Jeptha and Nancy migrated to Chambers Co., AL, where they finally settled with their family. After Nancy’s death, Jeptha married again late in life to a widow named Mrs. Harriet E. Bozeman (who was the mother of Dr. Nathan Bozeman a celebrated physician in New York) and would live to the age of ninety. He was buried on his plantation in Chambers Co., AL."

"Obituary of James Fowler Harrington

Married to Sarah Lusk. Born in Union County or District (S.C.) the 2nd day of April, 1797. He was raised in the county i which he was born and married Sarah Lush in March 1817. Moved with his family in the fall of 1829 (to where?), and from there to Mississippi in 1841. Had lived in the neighborhood in which he died since Feb. 1818, professed religion, and joined the Baptist Church in 1825 and had therefore been a member of the church 60 years. Had attended during that time more than 40 associatins of his church as a delegate, and had filled all the various offices of his churches; but on account of age and feebleness had ask his church for the last 5 years of his life to fill his place as deacon with some other member of the church. He was ever when possible present at his church meetings and took great part and interest in all his church affairs. His seat there in the future will be vacant. He saised a large family, ten children to be grown, four of whom had already preceded him to the great beyond. During the last few years of his life he often spoke of how soon he must follow the kind wife who had been dead since May 18, 1860 and other loved ones who had gone before. But he spoke of it in no dread for he often remarked that he was ready to go and be at rest. He was on the 21 day of Aug. 1884 laid in Amity churchyard beside his sainted wife there to rest till the Judgement morn.

A sleep in Jesus Blessed sleep from which non ever wakes to weep. A calm and undisturbed repose, mistaken by the last of foes. As neighbor and friend there was scarely any ike him. He would disoblige himself to accomdate a friend; as a husband he was kind and loving. As a father tender, devoted and good. He lived a long and eventful life, and died, wept for by a large family and circle of friends. Peash to his ashes."

I have two unrelated family sheets that state that George Cowan Darwin married Delilah Harrington in Richmond, Virginia in 1796. I do not know if this data has been taken from a specific record or whether it is based on an intuitive deduction that their eldest son, born 16 Oct. 1796, was named Richmond, in celebration of the place of their nuptials. I can only say that the 1860 census for Butlers Landing, Jackson Co., TN, where Richmond’s name is given as Richman Dirvin, aged 63, his place of birth is given as South Carolina. Ten years later in 1870, while still at Butlers Landing, Richmond Darwin is shown as: Darwin, R, now aged 73, with a place of birth as Virginia. I suppose the fact that Richmond offers Virginia on the later census makes me consider it quite plausible that his parents were also married in Virginia. As mentioned in section 3.11, the 1803-45 records of El Bethel Baptist Church of Union County (now Cherokee County), SC show that on October 1803, 4th Saturday: Received by experience Brother George Darwin. On Sunday baptised him.” “May 1805 Monthly Meeting: Received by experience Our Sister Delilah Darwin. “February 1808 Monthly Meeting: Letter of dismissal granted to Sister Delilah Darwin.” Soon thereafter, George with his wife Delilah and six children moved from York Co., SC to their river-bottom plantation in White’s Bend of the Cumberland River, Jackson Co., TN. I do not know how eventful the journey was, their son Richmond would have been aged 11, followed by Chapman (aged 8), Nancy (aged 7), William Green (aged 4), Young John (nearly 3) and baby Washington Darwin (about 8 months old) and Delilah was also carrying her next daughter Mary, who would be born in July 1808.
At present I do not have details of the land records but I wonder if George’s brother William owned a separate tract of land or whether he agreed to work with George on his White Bend’s Plantation that is sometimes referenced as the Darwin Plantation and would later be renamed Riverside Farm. The Tennessee census for 1810 does not appear to show a record for either Darwin brother and ten years later in 1820, there are three separate households for G.C. Darwin, his son shown as Richman Darwin, and for William Darwin together with three of his sons. Since these census entries are all on the same page 7, it does suggest that they were living in close proximity to one and other and possibly sharing their work activity. By 1830 both his son Richmond as well as his brother William Washington Darwin had moved on to Alabama. George and Delilah would live out their lives on their plantation and are buried in the Darwin Cemetery, which was on part of their land that was fortunately on high ground and has survived to this day as most of the land was taken by eminent domain for the Cordell Hull Dam and Lake and is now under water.
